What is Bionano?
BioNanoScience is the convergence of Biology, Physics, Photonics, Nanotechnology and Medicine
for new discoveries in Life Sciences, ultimately targeted to solving healthcare problems.
The BioNanoScience program at ICFO aims at a holistic understanding of biological function and mechanisms of molecular regulation at the nanoscale within the full complexity of living cells.
Moreover, through fundamental understanding and the combination of novel nano-tools for biomolecular manipulation and ultra-sensitive sensing, we expect to have an impact on solutions for the treatment and preventive diagnosis of diseases, including targeted nanomedicine.
BioNano at ICFO includes the development and application of cutting edge optical techniques such as super-resolution nanoscopy, light sheet microscopy, and multi-color single molecule dynamics, among others.
We apply these techniques together with quantitative data analysis tools to address the nanoscale complexity of living cells, relating information at the nanoscale to cellular function.
An important part of our activities are also focused on the development of ultra-sensitive bio-sensing and bio-nanodevices, for diverse applications in the Life Science sector, including NanoMedicine.
At the fundamental level, but still with potential impact in Biology, we are exploring two new exciting areas of research: quantum biology and theory of complex systems in direct connection with the understanding of life.
